Kim Sundeen

Kim Sundeen is the owner and operator of GeoInformatica Consulting Group, LLC, a geospatial consulting practice focused on bringing geospatial insight to life and into the hands of the people who need it.

Kim is a geospatial expert and senior software engineer who works at the intersection of GIS, software engineering, cloud systems, data platforms, and practical geospatial problem solving. Through GeoInformatica Consulting, Kim helps organizations turn location-based data into usable systems, reliable workflows, and decision-ready geospatial products.

This book grows out of that same mission: helping software engineers who are new to spatial thinking understand the history, theory, mathematics, tools, engineering patterns, and emerging technologies that shape modern geospatial software engineering.

Professional Focus

  • Geospatial software engineering
  • GIS architecture and implementation
  • Cloud-native geospatial systems
  • Spatial data engineering and analytics
  • Web mapping and geospatial application development
  • GeoAI, GeoRAG, and emerging geospatial technologies
  • Translating geospatial concepts for software engineering teams

Selected Accomplishments

Kim brings more than 18 years of GIS experience and a decade of geospatial software engineering experience across government, nonprofit, utility, conservation, public-sector, and technology organizations. Her work spans full-stack geospatial development, GIS architecture, cloud deployment, data engineering, mobile mapping, utility networks, spatial analysis, machine learning, and developer training.

Career highlights include:

  • Founded GeoInformatica Consulting Group, LLC in 2018 to provide GIS architecture, cloud GIS development, geospatial training, web mapping, and custom spatial software solutions.
  • Built and supported geospatial applications for web, desktop, and mobile using React, React Native, Angular, TypeScript, JavaScript, Python, C# .NET, FastAPI, Flask, Express.js, SQL, PostgreSQL/PostGIS, GeoServer, ArcGIS Enterprise, ArcGIS Online, and Esri developer frameworks.
  • Architected and modernized spatial data platforms, geoprocessing APIs, and field survey workflows that reduced manual data entry from weeks or days into automated publishing and reporting workflows.
  • Led and contributed to utility GIS modernization efforts, including Esri Utility Network migration, gas and electric utility tooling, ArcGIS Pro add-ins, web APIs, data migration pipelines, attribute rules, and field/mobile applications.
  • Designed, built, tested, and released C#, Python, and SQL ETL toolsets for gas and electric utility network migration, including work connected to an early official Esri Utility Network implementation.
  • Built 30+ modular Esri ArcGIS Maps SDK for JavaScript tools and associated Jest/Jasmine tests for custom portal workflows used by more than 1,000 customers.
  • Improved production engineering practices through CI/CD, Docker, AWS CodeBuild, CloudWatch, Cloudflare, ECR, Octopus, Azure DevOps, TFS, unit testing, and optimized PostgreSQL/PostGIS and Elasticsearch queries.
  • Contributed to AI and machine learning workflows, including an LLM-assisted Python tool for auto-generating ETL field mapping and database migration logic from user prompts.
  • Developed spatial analysis and frontend/backend tooling for fire-risk prediction workflows with FireScore.AI, including Esri Experience Builder Developer Edition and React Native mobile development.
  • Managed software teams and technical delivery, including leading engineers on a two-year, $1 million Esri Utility Network project, translating workshops into 50+ Agile user stories, coaching engineers on reusable architecture patterns, and delivering customer demos and design workshops.
  • Created and delivered geospatial training for software developers, utility professionals, nonprofit workshop attendees, and GIS users, including AWS, Azure, ArcGIS Enterprise, Utility Network, Python, ModelBuilder, metadata, web mapping, and open source GIS topics.
  • Supported the MN GIS/LIS Consortium as an affiliate member by coordinating Azure virtual environments, teaching workshops, and supporting spring and fall training events.
  • Served the GIS and technology community through conference committees, the Wisconsin Land Information Association Board of Directors, the National Tribal Geographic Information Support Center Publications Committee, Duluth Women in Tech/Women Who Code leadership, and .NET Duluth meetup coordination.
  • Presented and taught at professional events on topics including MapLibre, Leaflet, React, Utility Network, Azure, AWS, Jupyter notebooks, web portfolios, metadata editing, long-term GIS planning, field-to-web utility GIS workflows, and open source GIS.

Kim's academic background connects software engineering with environmental and spatial science: a Master of Science in Conservation Biology and Sustainable Development, a Graduate Certificate in Geographic Information Systems, graduate GIS web map programming coursework, a C# .NET programming certificate, a Bachelor of Science in Wildlife Ecology, and GISP certification since 2012.
